About NeighborhoodRanked
NeighborhoodRanked helps you understand any US neighborhood at a glance. We compute transparent, percentile-based scores for 33,000+ zip codes across four dimensions:
- Safety — crime rates from the FBI Uniform Crime Report
- Affordability — housing costs vs income from the US Census
- Quality of Life — education levels, commute times, homeownership
- Jobs & Economy — unemployment rates and economic health
How Scores Work
Every score is a percentile (0–100). A score of 85 means that zip code ranks better than 85% of all US zip codes on that metric. We believe in transparent methodology — you can always see what data drives each score.
Data Sources
All data comes from free, public US government sources:
- US Census Bureau — American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates for demographics, income, housing, education, and employment
- FBI — Uniform Crime Report (UCR) for crime statistics
- Census TIGER/Line — geographic boundaries for zip code areas
Why Free?
We believe neighborhood data built from public sources should be freely accessible. Other sites charge $40–100/month for similar information. We keep the site free and support it through non-intrusive advertising.
